Shoolagiri, Krishnagiri · 30 min from Bangalore
Thirty-five acres of orchard, lake and open sky, half an hour past Hosur. Pet-friendly cottages, three organic meals a day, and a fire that runs late into the night.

Thirty minutes past Hosur
You come off the Chennai road, take a left you would miss if you were not looking, and the traffic simply stops being a thing.

Then the gate
Thatched sit-outs, cut grass, the valley falling away behind. Most people stand still for a minute before they say anything.

By evening
Coals going, skewers loaded, the sky doing what it does out here. This is usually the point at which somebody asks about staying another night.
The farm
Ecoland is thirty-five acres outside Shoolagiri — orchards, open fields, a lake at the edge and hills behind it. We grow a good part of what lands on your plate, and the rest comes from farms close enough to name.
There is no lobby, no schedule and no piped music. There is a fire in the evening, a dog who will adopt you for the weekend, and more stars than most people have seen in years.

Things to do at the farm

Tandoori grills over open coals, a fire that runs late and the kind of conversation only firelight gets out of people.

Pitch a tent beside the cottages. Hike out at dusk, sleep under canvas, wake to mist sitting low over the fields.

Red-earth trails that climb out of the farm and open onto rock faces with the whole valley underneath you.

No city glow for miles. Bring the telescope out and the Milky Way turns up on schedule, most clear nights.

Rods, patience and a flask of chai. The lake is a ten-minute walk and rarely has anyone else on it.

Walk out through the scrub forest with our guides, past dolmens older than most things you have stood next to.

Bee-eaters, hoopoes, drongos and the occasional kingfisher working the lake. Bring binoculars, or borrow ours.
Nothing here is compulsory. This is simply how most weekends tend to go once people stop checking their phones.
6:30
Filter coffee on the sit-out while the fields are still grey.
8:30
Idli, sambar and chutney — most of it grown a hundred steps away.
11:00
Coracles, rods and shade. Nothing that needs to be anywhere.
13:30
Served under the thatch. Second helpings are assumed.
16:30
Bikes for some, a kite and open lawn for everyone else.
19:00
Coals lit, skewers loaded, the day slows right down.
21:00
Lie back. Count what you never see from the city.

The farm table
No menu cards, no à la carte. You eat what the farm has that day, at a long table, with everyone else — which is most of the point.
All shot on the farm, by us and by guests. Click any of them to see it properly.
Pulled from reviews left on Google and Instagram by people who came for one night and tried to extend.
An oxygen-filled environment. We slept better in two nights here than we had in a month in the city.
Delicious homely food, and the staff went out of their way for our kids. The bonfire was the highlight.
Cozy, calm and serene. The sunrise over the fields alone is worth the drive.
They let us bring our dog and treated him better than us. He has not stopped sulking since we left.
Clean cottages, honest pricing, and a lake you get to yourself. We have already rebooked.
Worked remotely for three days from the sit-out. Best office view I have had.
